Sustainabloom Introduces Sustainability Planning Template for Retail Florists https://floristsreview.com/sustainabloom-introduces-sustainability-planning-template-for-retail-florists/ Mon, 24 Nov 2025 17:59:24 +0000 https://floristsreview.com/?p=888109 Alexandria, Virginia – Sustainabloom has released a brand-new free resource to help floral retailers take actionable, measurable steps toward sustainability. The Sustainability Planning Template for Retail Florists is designed to make sustainability planning approachable for businesses of all sizes: helping users assess where they are today, identify opportunities for improvement, and create a trackable plan to move forward.

Developed in collaboration with leading floral businesses and industry experts, the template reflects both scientific insights and real-world applications. It was created to meet florists where they are, recognizing that every business’s path toward sustainability looks a little different. Based on an industry-wide survey published earlier this year by the Sustainabloom team, sustainability planning was identified as an emerging practice in floriculture businesses.

“Many businesses want to be more sustainable but don’t know where to start,” said Kevin McCarthy, President and CEO of Family Flowers. “This new template changes that. It gives florists a clear, practical roadmap that’s flexible enough to fit their needs and powerful enough to inspire meaningful change.”

The Sustainability Planning Template encourages users to evaluate their current practices through a simple five-part framework known as FLOWS – covering Flowers, Location, Operations, Waste, and Supply Chain. It guides users in setting realistic goals, tracking progress, and celebrating achievements over time.

More than just a checklist, the template is an invitation to turn good intentions into measurable results. Florists can document their sustainability commitments, identify growth areas, and follow a suggested six-month timeline that supports continuous improvement, from planning and implementation to reflection and adjustment.

“The template was built with input from across the floral community. We listened to florists, gathered feedback from experts, and tested ideas with a real shop,” said Amanda Solliday, lead project researcher from NC State University.

“The result is a living tool: one that grows with the industry and helps every business make progress at its own pace.”

The new resource is part of Sustainabloom’s growing suite of free educational tools that make sustainability attainable and rewarding for every segment of the floriculture industry. Future versions of the Sustainability Planning Template are already in development and will be tailored for additional industry segments.

The Sustainability Planning Template for Florists is now available for free download on the Sustainabloom website here.

Using Cut Flowers to Improve Emotional Health https://floristsreview.com/using-cut-flowers-to-improve-emotional-health/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 15:13:16 +0000 https://floristsreview.com/?p=887710 “For more than 5,000 years, people have been growing flowers, not only for their beauty, but also for their healing and symbolic value. For decades, various (behavioral) studies have shown that plants and flowers improve our emotional health. Rutgers University in the US demonstrated this in an extensive study at the beginning of this century. Some years later, The University of Central Lancashire came to the same conclusion. Other universities and institutes followed, including the Mizuho Information & Research Institute in Tokyo. This institute recently investigated the psychological and physiological effects of red roses.”

Previous studies have shown that flowers and plants have a positive effect on:

Improved air quality: the presence of flowers and plants improves air quality. Plants convert pollutants into clean oxygen, which contributes to better breathing.

Reducing stress and anxiety: various studies show that flowers and plants have a relaxing effect, which may reduce stress and anxiety.

Improving concentration and cognition: the presence of flowers and plants improves cognitive function.

Improved mood: flowers and plants can give us a feeling of joy and happiness.

In the study by the Mizuho Information & Research Institute in Tokyo, male office workers were exposed to thirty unscented red roses arranged in a cylindrical glass vase for four minutes. A control group was not exposed to flowers.

“The test subjects were exposed to thirty unscented pink roses (Rosa, Dekora) arranged in a cylindrical glass vase for four minutes. In the control group, the test subjects were not exposed to flowers. After the test, the test subjects completed a questionnaire. The order of exposure was compensated between the test subjects. In test subjects who had been exposed to roses, the high-frequency component of heart rate variability was significantly higher than in the control group. Feelings such as ‘comfortable’, ‘relaxed’ and ‘natural’ were also more common among subjects exposed to roses.

“The data from the Japanese study support the presence of physiological and psychological relaxing effects of exposure to flowers (and plants) in office workers.

To me, it’s a no-brainer: more flowers and plants in the office, but also at home!”

Kvitkova Vanil launches Savage Bloom

US (LA): New flower collection for men sparks strong buzz

Historically, flowers have been marketed predominantly to and for women. But in March 2025, Kvitkova Vanil, a floral studio in Los Angeles, launched Savage Bloom to challenge that idea. “It is our first floral collection designed specifically with men in mind, blending strong, sculptural arrangements with unexpected textures and palettes. The goal is to celebrate masculinity in all its forms and to make luxury florals an accessible and meaningful gift for everyone, regardless of gender”, says the company’s Olga Volkova. And since its launch, the collection has seen a noticeable increase in demand.

Focus on composition, form, and texture rather than traditional softness
For the flowers in the collection, they focus on blooms with structure and edge, using masculine colors. The bouquets also feature exotic flowers, with faux leather used for wrapping. “The color palette leans into darker tones, earthy neutrals, and pops of unexpected contrast. Each arrangement is designed to feel powerful yet elegant, with a focus on composition, form, and texture rather than traditional softness,” says Volkova.

Positive responses
The response to Savage Bloom has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Volkova. “Both from our existing clientele and from a new, mostly male audience who are discovering florals in a fresh way. We’ve also seen increased interest from stylists, photographers, and event planners looking for florals that feel more modern and bold. Social media engagement around the collection has been strong, with many followers tagging us and using Savage Bloom in styled shoots and gifts.”

Uptick in sales
These positive responses have translated into higher sales. Since the launch, we’ve noticed a measurable uptick in orders referencing Savage Bloom, particularly for male birthdays, business gifting, and editorial collaborations. It’s also helped us reach a broader customer base and open up new conversations about what floristry can be.”

Marketing
How is the new collection being marketed? “We’ve approached the campaign with a mix of visual storytelling and subtle provocation, like styled photoshoots, short films, influencer collaborations, and guerrilla marketing across Los Angeles. We’re also leveraging platforms like Instagram and TikTok to spark conversation and feature real men interacting with flowers in untraditional ways.”

A perspective shift
To conclude, Volkova emphasizes that Savage Bloom is more than just a product, it’s a shift in perspective. “We believe florals are one of the most universal expressions of emotion, and there’s nothing “feminine” or “masculine” about beauty. We hope Savage Bloom encourages people to rethink how and why they give flowers, and to whom.”

Previously called Boujee Blooms & Styling, now BOUJEEHAUS is a Sydney-based boutique design business that specializes in floral design, creative design, and styling. Jess, with her team, designs custom weddings and events that have an unmistakable je ne sais quoi—bold, memorable, and effortlessly stylish. At BOUJEEHAUS, boring is never an option. Bold blooms replace the bland, while dramatic design details take the spotlight over the drab. More About Jess, the Founder

Jess often reflects on how serendipity led her to design dream weddings and create statement florals for clients who align with her authentic style. A long-time admirer of strong color palettes, designer fashion, art, architecture, and sleek interior design, Jess continues to draw inspiration from these passions in her work today. However, her journey into the floral industry wasn’t a conventional one.

Originally, she pursued a career as a physiotherapist, yoga teacher, and Pilates instructor. Her path took a turn when she took a sabbatical to travel the world, which led to an unexpected opportunity in the superyacht industry as a chief stewardess. While working in some of the world’s most luxurious destinations, she curated new-build yacht interiors and orchestrated elaborate onboard events, navigating complex logistics. This experience sparked her creative passion and motivated her to explore similar opportunities upon returning to Sydney. After enrolling in floristry and interior design courses, Jess founded her business—initially known as Boujee Blooms and Styling.

Three years later, the brand evolved into Boujee Haus, reflecting its edgy, artistic style and rebellious, sassy attitude. When she says everything, but EVERYTHING is about bright colors it’s because this is her business motto. Jess feels incredibly grateful for the impact the business has had on clients’ lives, many of whom she now considers lifelong friends. She remains excited that the company continues to attract like-minded clients who share a vision for bold, outside-the-box design concepts.

When she’s not managing the many facets of the business or styling herself to complement her floral creations, she can often be found at a new restaurant, effortlessly coordinating her outfit with the venue’s interior—dirty martini or perfectly paired cocktail in hand. For Jess, whether in business or life, the smallest details and flowers always matter.

The team specializes in designing weddings, private parties and soirées, brand events, and editorial and set designs. If you want to get a closer look at her colorful designs and get inspired, visitBOUJEEHAUS Instagram.

Inspiring floral communities with Aniska Creations

November 19, 2024

For this month’s Details University Live, the team had the pleasure of speaking with Ana and Anais Vivas, the mother-daughter duo behind Aniska Creations. Since relocating from Venezuela to Miami, the pair has built a thriving floral design business that is deeply rooted in their passion for flowers and their commitment to supporting the Latino floristry community. In this session, they shared their inspiring journey, their dedication to empowering fellow florists, and how they provide essential tools and resources through workshops and classes. For those who couldn’t join, Details University provided an official recap.

Aniska Creations, based in Doral, FL, has been flourishing for six years. The Vivas family moved from Venezuela to the United States in 2016, each forging new career paths along the way. Ana, who previously worked in event design in Venezuela, found a shared passion for florals with her partner, which ultimately led to the creation of Aniska Creations. Their commitment to design and floristry has made Aniska Creations a beloved local establishment.

Ana and Anais emphasize the importance of attending industry workshops, which were crucial in helping them master the fundamentals of floral design and understand how the floral industry operates in the United States. These workshops also provided valuable networking opportunities, allowing them to learn from other florists and build confidence in their craft. Now, they pay it forward by offering their own workshops, helping others grow their businesses. Their key piece of advice to emerging florists is to attend as many workshops as possible. These workshops cover essential topics like business strategies, marketing and design, while also helping florists refine their vision for their careers.

The Vivas duo’s passion for their craft and community is evident in everything they do. They have worked tirelessly to create opportunities for Latino florists, helping them succeed while fostering pride in their heritage. Within the first year of business, they began offering workshops in Spanish, recognizing the importance of providing resources in a language that feels most comfortable. This commitment allows florists to engage more fully, giving them the confidence to invest in their careers. What began as teaching workshops in their living room has now expanded to hosting events in their studio’s second-floor space and renting beautiful venues. The growth of Aniska Creations mirrors their blossoming journey.

Aniska Creations has also been fortunate to showcase their talents both locally and beyond. One of their most meaningful experiences has been their participation in Fleurs de Villes each year in Miami. For the Vivas family, the event is a “dream come true” and a labor of love. The Voyage edition, in particular, was especially significant, as they created a mannequin inspired by their home country, Venezuela. The stunning display earned them first place, and the project was especially emotional, with many team members from Venezuela contributing to its creation.

For florists looking to expand into new markets, Anais suggests considering the holiday season, particularly Christmas. She notes that the holiday season is one of the busiest times for Aniska Creations. Starting Nov. 1, the team begins decorating trees and handling holiday events and decor through early January.

In addition to their holiday projects, Aniska Creations specializes in Latino weddings, with peak wedding season running from November to January. This busy season helps balance out the slower summer months that are typical in Miami.

The Details team is grateful to have had Ana and Anais as guests this month. They will be hosting a workshop March 18-19 at La Estancia Farms, where participants can learn how to create stunning large floral installations, elegant container arrangements and luxurious table settings. This year’s workshop will feature both outdoor installations in the venue’s gardens and indoor designs, including innovative hanging arrangements. The workshop will be conducted entirely in Spanish and is open to florists of all skill levels.

A Storm of Sky Blue and Bright White

I’m honored to talk about my award-winning design created during the flower and art festival in Ksiaz Castle.

By: ZBIGNIEW DZIWULSKI | 10-01-2024 | 3 min read

The Flower and Art Festival held annually at the Ksiaz Castle in Wałbrzych, is an intriguing event that attracts flower and plant enthusiasts within and outside Poland. The 2023 festival, which was built around the theme ‘World of Legends and Magic’ saw an immense of talented floral designers take part in the creation of impeccable designs in the garden and rooms within the castle.

I was honored to be among the headlining designers for the festival and here is a quick peek into my award-winning floral arrangement in the 2024 Floral Trend Colors Sky Blue and Bright White, which I presented during the festival.

Lessons Learned From the Stormy Seas

‘Storm’ is the title of the arrangement created during the 2023 Flower Festival at the Ksiaz Castle in Wałbrzych. During the Festival, many castle chambers and spaces were decorated with flowers and arrangements related to the life and activities of the most famous resident of the castle – Duchess Daisy.

One of the rooms where I had the pleasure of decorating and coordinating floral works was the Gold Room on the 3rd floor of the castle. A beautiful space, with many gildings and a rich history, and therefore also demanding. With this type of interior, it is important to respect the decor and history.

Storm-Floral-Design

The inspiration for my flower design was Princess Daisy’s diaries and the words she wrote down – nothing shows me the essence of existence more than a storm at sea. In my work, I tried to present the turbulence of storm waves and the unpredictability and beauty of nature with flowers.  the wave structure was made of birch shoots intricately connected to create a stable base for placing the flowers.

Visitors-sitting-next-to-storm-floral-design-by-Zbigniew-Dziwulski

The arrangement was in the tones of white, navy blue, gray, and turquoise, i.e. the colors of stormy waves. This project included delphiniums, hydrangeas, carnations, as well as limonium and gypsophila, which were supposed to refer to foamy water waves. The arrangement was admired by tens of thousands of visitors to the castle.

Tourists took part in the voting for the best arrangement. Ultimately, the Storm won first place in the tourists’ vote and also the Special Award of the castle employees.  it was a huge success for my entire team of assistants and the Association of Polish Florists that we represented.

A Stage Rich in History and Heritage

It was a pleasure to participate during the Flower and Art Festival, alongside talented and incredible designers. It is such a great fulfillment to contribute to that amazing ‘flower feeling’ and amazing moments that come forth from them. Through several designs presented, including my own ‘Storm’, every visitor was amazed and enjoyed the beauty and magical touch of blooms.

I would like to express my thanks to the castle management for the trust they placed in me, allowing me to work during the Festival. Great appreciation for the work and talent of the assistants – Anna Gliwa, Anna Plecety, Małgorzata Wróblewska-Tylus, Magdalena Płoskonka, Magdalena Żukowicz, and Piotr Konieczny.

City of Burnaby, British Columbia Canada

By Hitomi Gilliam AIFD

floral team with eco sculptures

Since 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been delighted to infuse the City of Burnaby, a neighboring city to Vancouver, Canada, with the spirit of Joy and Whimsy through our annual Woodland Christmas tradition. This contract involves a fabulous team I assemble each November to transform the EcoSculptures which are planted in season but dismantled late fall, to be decorated with a broad assortment of Christmas greens from the Pacific Northwest and a random collection of cuttings, botanical treasures from the City Park and Landscape crew.  The special EcoSculpture Department maintains a vision to bring Fun, Whimsy and Imagination to all their City parks and green spaces to put Eco-Sustainability in the forefront, in their public art to be enjoyed by the community.

reindeer sculpture

There were 28 EcoSculptures in all to complete this season to be installed in groupings in 8 locations throughout the city.  They included several Owl families which this year went ‘Gnomish’, Eagles, Cranes, Bears, giant Salmon, and a team of 8 Sheep which were recruited to pull the Santa’s Sleigh decked out as Woodland Rein-Sheep.  The Whimsicality in the imagination to design each year differently…. to add special personalities to the woodland creatures… is the job for our creative team.  We work side by side with the EcoSculpture team with total crew of 6 to 10 pairs of hands working to craft the unique characters which come to life in the city’s Civic Square, the Library, the Schools to bring smiles to everyone.

designers working on a sculpture

We work on every detail that create intrigue, curiosity, leading to imaginative storytelling and conversations with children and families. The holiday season is family time….  City of Burnaby want to entertain imagination through these woodland creatures with importance placed on Eco-Sustainable Artistry.  All the sculptures and supplies implemented to create fits into REUSE to REDUCE… all the tools and components are used and dismantled and reused again and again. Sourcing of botanicals are as local as possible with some of the best materials coming from selective prunings and from clean-up after wind storms.  Absolutely no invasives are used.  The general vibe is Natural Woodland Organics with fun and whimsy…. perfect way to teach the importance of Eco Sustainability to their citizens.  We are ever so grateful to be included in this annual mission. It is gratifying to hear observers on the street commenting that the display gets better and better each year.
